took 10x longer and cost a few hundred billion more to build.

There the NASA way of slow, costly and conservative so you get it right the first time.
Then theres the SpaceX way of rapid testing of seeing what works so explosions are expected.
With Falcon it definetly paid off. SpaceX just lost a booster after being used 19 times and even then it wasn't due to a failure of the booster but because it fell over on the barge on rough seas.
