I actually just started reading the silmerillion for my first time.
Read all the others when the films came out.

The Silmerillion serves as the bedrock for the alternate universe that's "based on ours". I think it's much more allegorical to the Christian Bible as compared to the stories proper. By creating an allegorical bedrock and then extending a long history of unique events from it, when he writes LOTR you get something that is more than allegory, which in my opinion makes the work more powerful than Lewis' Narnia stuff.

I thought silmerillion was the prequel. Explaining the origins of sauron. I just finished the frist two mini books in there, which do draw a parallel to the creation and the rebellion in heaven.

No it's the foundational creation story for the universe that Middle Earth inhabits. But the mythologized stories give way to Legends which then take you to the end of the first age I believe. Although I think they do talk about the numenorians in the second age as well.
