They is (and "always" was) correctly used as a singular or plural pronoun in the English language. It is used when the gender of a person and/or their number is unknown. The same is true for "them" or "their"
For people speaking English as a second language this sounds weird, especially if they do not have a similar pronoun in their language. In German there is he she and it (er, sie, es) but no neutral or common pronoun (I believe in some Nordic languages these do exist but don't know how that works).
