This guy knows what he's doing only problem is, if the head is busted, you have to throw away the handle also.

Much stronger to have a full through tenon . 

Also those slits that were cut to receive the wedges should have been drilled at the point where they end .. otherwise seasonal movement will propagate those slits and could crack down the handle . 

This type of hidden joinery is very hard to accomplish to high standards as the forces are hard to guage accurately. 

Just go buy a hammer .
