The problem with "do your own research" is confirmation bias.
You have to "do your own fact-checking" which involves primary sources or at least understanding each outlet's influences. It's difficult & time consuming.

I've been on one of those school trips to the nation's capitol and other historical places. The teachers and escorts should have gathered the kids for the bus elsewhere once they saw what was going on, is what it comes down to.
Kids are not behaving on those trips for the most part, yes. But they didn't start anything and there was no mal intent from them.
They were white mostly, some of them bought hats from nearby vendors and got focus fired in a strange situation.
