I read about Carlos Hathcock in the book Inside the Crosshairs: Snipers in Vietnam and some of the actions are incredible. One of the interesting parts is about how he used a .50-caliber machinegun with a scope mounted on it to kill a number of VC/NVA soldiers. He killed one man at 2,500 yards.
Firing from a hillside position using an Unertl 8X scope on a .50-caliber machine gun stabilized by a sandbag-supported M3 tripod, Hathcock engaged a Vietcong pushing a weapon-laden bicycle at 2,500 yards. Hathcock's first round disabled the bicycle, the second struck the enemy soldier in the chest.
Noone had ever used a .50-caliber machine gun in this way-firing single shots with a scope mounted on it-at that distance-though it had been used before that way in Korea. That record distance was broken by a Canadian sniper in 2002 and three others have also done so. His use of the .50 caliber machine gun resulted in the developement of the Barret .50 caliber sniper rifle-a devastating weapon.

Damn good question. Hollywood floats remakes of remake projects but doesn't get into telling an incredible new untold REAL story? Crazy.
