He's going to run into some trouble when on Deadpool mops up at the theaters. Deadpool, by the way, beloved by both the Right and the Left, so how is that going to work? What would be interesting is to see if these same reviewers state that Deadpool 2 is poorly timed. Although, DP is a fun and wonky movie while Deathwish is a take-me-seriously revenge story...the tones are quite different.
Overall he brings up a good point of movies sometimes projecting political messages when there is not one present...but he's making the assumption that only works in favor of the Left. We've all seen those electoral college maps smeared in red of people who voted for Trump, so wouldn't this movie be killing it in the box office? Well, no, it's not. And there's also nothing wrong with reviewing movies through a political lens.
Ultimately we're talking about an Eli Roth remake starring a washed up actor. Is it really a surprise critics are shitting on it?

Rotten Tomatoes is extremely overrated. Both the audience & reviewer scores are horseshit. To get an idea on how good a movie is, checkout the IMDB score, subtract 1 point if it's a blockbuster & then look at the metacritic score for an even more general idea of appeal. Look at Rotten Tomatoes if you want to roll your eyes. Taking it further you can look at the director & writer's past few works & certain producers can also be worth noting (if you notice films with particularly high production standards)

A large part of the gun shootings since 2000 were "inspired" by the Columbine shooting(where shooters specifically mentioned or seached for information regarding Columbine shooters before carrying out attacks themselves).
But I wonder what originally inspired them to start blasting away in a quest of revenge wearing trenchcoats?
Are some movies simply deemed "off-limits" for criticism related to these events by the media because a certain amount of time has passed?
Is the image of a action hero-type protagonist, often displayed as seemingly invulnerable to his enemies' gunfire really that enticing? Could that be why these kids pick defenceless people as their targets rather than authorities who could provide such an experience?
Has the "beating up your bully-fantasy" turned into "kill your bully and anyone that looks at you the wrong way but I'm about to die anyway so everyone dies-fantasy"?
Why is it that torture victims try to continue after their traumatic experiences, while troubled young students gives up every moral code they've been taught, and willingly risks their lives to cause other people insufferable harm at random, over bullying?
Who is responsible for educating that logic into young people's brains?
Parents?
Teachers?
Television?
Social media?
What are the IQ level of these people?
How much time do they spend finding the actual source of their suffering or problems, and do they have any sort of self-insight to even consider themselves as being one?
And why do attempts at mass murder still happen with single perpetrators not using guns at all?(mass stabbings, use of chemicals, vehicular manslaughter).
I remember watching this scene from The Basketball Diaries when I was younger(predates Columbine shooting). I thought it was the coolest fucking thing I've ever seen. But not because I was particularily different than other kids my age, but because I recognized that it was designed to be the coolest fucking thing you've ever seen.
But I do believe there are kids out there, that would watch this, and not recognize that this is a design in order to further a story about troubled kids, while still trying to make money at the box office.
Kids that don't recognize that videos are not calls to action if everything in their lives seems to hit bottom.
Even adults that would use the exact same arguments as those who do perpetrate these actions, when they see videos like this one, or video games that are repeatedly blamed, like GTA.
But everyone knows that it's an excuse.
Scientific research shows us that it's an excuse.
They will use media to justify actions they already wanted to commit.
Most of the recent shooters knew about Columbine.
They researched them, in order to know what to do.
Who provided that information?
The news.
The news, especially, bombarded us for years with the tales of Columbine, so much that we can't even hear the name of the place or sometimes even go bowling without our minds going there. And they keep reporting on it to the point where the kids know that they can just search for it a number of times, that any investigation will lead to authorities finding it. Then the media will reveal it to the public as a another common denominator, again, a justification in the minds of the public, without legally concluding it.
Why? Because they know it boosts their ratings. It's something "everyone" agrees on simply because they've heard it every single time and rarely questioned it.
It's a myth we all help perpetuate.
Everyone knows something about it. Many have seen the footage. And we are basically one youtube trip away from hours of documentaries on the events that transpired there, and opinionators' rants about them, and those videos views and ratings boosts with every shooting that goes by.
So there are many levels of motivation for repeating the same bullshit over and over again, by politicians, by the news, by politically motivated celebrities, artists and creators, and the general public: the unstoppable social media army of shitheads who will do anything for extra "likes". It's even gone all the way down to a conversation between two people alone.
And absolutely nothing will come of any of it.
Because nobody has the balls to admit that people want to commit heinous acts from time to time at the expence of others, just like animals, for any reason they themselves deem adequate, with any tools they have at their disposal. And sometimes, a few people with that potential gets the chance to do it and follows through with it.
Potential works both ways.
But not you of course. And not me, obviously. Not anyone I know. Not my students, I make sure of that. And not my kids, definitely. Because I raised them right. I did everything right...
