Also in the end of the 90ies they bought high speed rail, signalling / SCADA and overhead line technology from Germany and other european companies. Colleagues of mine testet their first prototypes and it was a desaster. Nobody really understood why the company (then Daimler Chrysler Rail Systems) sold the design and manufacturing rights of high speed electrification products to them but in the end I think it turned out to be a shrewd move because they otherwise would have just ordered a "small railway" and copied the shit anyway.
